Copthorne circular

Try a country walk for refreshing views – like this early morning mist in the High Weald on this walk from Copthorne

2:18pm Monday 5th January 2009

In the north of Sussex, nudging right up to the border with Surrey, is the community of Copthorne. With the expanding conurbations of East Grinstead and Crawley on either side, it is easy for travellers to overlook the village as they hurtle along the busy A264 linking its larger, urban neighbours.

One of serveral converted oast houses along this winter-friendly route, which criss-crosses the River Rother

12:24pm Monday 29th December 2008

From Burwash, a most delightful hilltop village, this walk heads northwards to cross and re-cross the wide valley of the River Rother, passing within easy reach of Stonegate Station, which can provide a convenient starting point if you are arriving by public transport.

Littleworth circular

Enjoy strolling beside the Adur on level Wealden paths.

4:22pm Monday 8th December 2008

The small community of Littleworth sits on a quiet country road to the north of Partridge Green. With a network of surrounding footpaths and bridleways, it provides an excellent starting point for a number of exploratory walks.

The pretty pond and parkland near Heaven Farm is just one of the views on offer during this walk

3:42pm Monday 1st December 2008

From the village of Horsted Keynes, this walk heads eastwards to encircle the nearby settlement of Danehill, crossing and recrossing two well-wooded valleys before returning along part of the Sussex Border Path, a longdistance walking route which sticks fairly closely to the boundary between East and West Sussex.

Plumpton and Blackcap circular

Blackcap from the path south of Warningore Farm

4:11pm Wednesday 19th November 2008

On two recent Argus walks we have been able to enjoy some views of Blackcap from paths across the Weald to the north, without actually venturing on to the Downs.

Plaistow circular

Plaistow Place, a typical Wealden house for a squire or rich gent, is passed at an early stage of the walk

3:36pm Wednesday 12th November 2008

In the north of Sussex, close to the border with Surrey, are a number of small villages with no major roads going through them and which retain an air of remoteness and isolation rare in today’s crowded South East.

East Hoathly circular

The Six Bells Pub in Chiddingly is a good place to take a break while enjoying this generally easy walk that links the village with East Hoathly

3:59pm Monday 3rd November 2008

This generally easy walk in the Low Weald links the two attractive villages of East Hoathly and Chiddingly, both with conveniently placed pubs and interesting churches, the stone spire of Chiddingly church being a notable landmark visible for miles around.

Devil's Dyke to Ditchling Beacon

Taking a bus to the walk will minimise your carbon footprint, and allow you to take in some gorgeous views on the way

2:45pm Monday 27th October 2008

This walk follows a linear route across the Downs.

Beckley circular

This beautiful view overlooking the valley of the River Tillingham can be seen from point five of the walk

2:21pm Monday 20th October 2008

Part of this walk passes through the commercially afforested areas of Beckley and Bixley Woods, home to a substantial colony of free-roaming wild boar, though you will be lucky to catch a glimpse of these shy nocturnal animals.
