Albion manager Micky Adams believes his team is in shape for Saturday’s test at Oldham – after focusing on fitness levels.

The players have been through a punishing schedule of double training sessions since the fifth-bottom Seagulls were beaten on their last outing at Stockport eight days ago.

Adams said: “We’ve had a mini pre-season, which has involved a lot of physical tests.

“We wanted to see what state of fitness they were at and what it showed is that some, not all of them, needed a little bit of a top-up.

“I think it will have done everybody the world of good. We’ve been pleased with what they have done and now it's back to football.

“I would think a lot of managers have given their players a bit of time off but obviously we couldn't do that, not in the situation we find ourselves in.

“We’ve had a disappointing beginning to the season. Coming away from Stockport, people said what a good footballing team we were. Against Huddersfield we played some good stuff but lost again.

“We have let ourselves down recently in terms of results, if not performances. We need a result, three points from somewhere, how ever we get them. We have all got to stand up and be counted.”

Adams will be trying to get the better of former Leeds team-mate John Sheridan, who has steered Oldham into fourth spot after finishing just below the Seagulls in eighth last season.

“This is the first time I have ever faced him as a manager but I have seen him on coaching courses,” Adams said. “They are doing great.

“We know what we are capable of doing but we have got to go and do it.

“A lot of people are writing us off. We have got to roll our sleeves up and get on with it. It’s nothing I haven’t faced before.”

Oldham have been boosted by the return to fitness of winger Deane Smalley after a hip injury.

Smalley came through a reserve game at Walsall on Tuesday and trains with the first team squad today and tomorrow.

so some players are not fit? some players not tall enough!! maybe adams should consider the players he has signed not good enough? also is it my imagination or have all 6 of the signings had injury needing surgery? his comment the club are not in a relegation battle but watford 11 pionts off play offs is complete nonsense! it kind of proves we are in a relegation battle!! as for players not being tall enough! perhaps concentrating on defence getting organised would help, anyway clear out is underway, expect robinson to be gone mid jan.

Did not mr adams say we have 4 games to forget the cup and cositrate on the league and push on up well with 2 gone we have gone down and the chances of getting much from the next 2 are slim so how is it we are not in a relegation battle. I thouught if you are only 1 point of the relegation zone that was a battle perhaps after the next 2 games he might admit we are in trouble. And yes all the new players he brought in in the summer except for Virgs who has had to play in at least 6 posisions have been a failure either not good enough or injured and have been at their previos clubs. As for the loan signings how come if we get them do they spend most of their time on the bench in one game or other Time to go mickey it never works the seconed time round and since you left us last time for pastures green what have you done either been saked or worked as number 2 for a failing club

Get real Micky. You are in a relegation battle & nobody at the club has the coaching ability to turn it around. If Paul Ince can be told to bring in a new coach at Blackburn, you should do the same if you want to keep your job & keep us up. Take off the rose tinted specs, drop Hawkins & move the club forward somehow.

Yet more excuses and no real answers. Adams has to set out how many games to get us back into the play-offs, if he fails that challenge then he has to go. Xmas is looking bleak and I can see us routed come January if something don't change! Sort it now!
