Comment: Albion must think big

When Albion signed Bas Savage, a member of the backroom staff casting eyes on him for the first time remarked “that’s better”.

He was relieved to see someone of stature walk through the door who might ruffle a few opposition feathers.

We all know the unorthodox Bas was not the greatest player in the world. He was also, as it transpired, something of a gentle giant, but I relay the story to emphasise the tall order Albion are facing.

The long and short of it is they are not big enough, in a physical sense, to cope with the rigours of League One.

Micky Adams has one of the smallest squads in the division – that is in terms of height rather than numbers.

They are often at a noticeable disadvantage in this respect when the teams line-up for kick-off.

Albion were as good, if not better, on the ball than their last opponents, Stockport.

They were beaten because, as Adams pointed out, they could not cope with County’s height and power from a couple of corners.

The Seagulls had four players 5ft 8ins or under starting at Edgeley Park – Matt Richards, Steve Thomson, Kevin Thornton and Stuart Fleetwood. Also, there was not a single six-footer on the bench.

It is hard to hide that many players when you are defending against physically imposing opposition.

Albion concede a lot more goals than they score from set plays, which have developed into an increasingly crucial facet of the game.

Now I am not advocating that Adams carries a tape measure when sizing up an overhaul of the squad during the January transfer window.

Height should not be a condition for signing a player – the first demand is that he will improve the squad – but it ought to be a consideration.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the epitome of the modern day footballer. He is tall, muscular, fit and fast, with quick feet, a sharp mind and, of course, bundles of ability.

Using the best player in Europe, if not the world, may seem a far-fetched example at Albion's level but a few more athletic six-footers could help them climb the table.

Stockport showed they can pass it and mix it. Oldham will provide a similarly formidable test for Adams’ strugglers on Saturday.

The team for their last match against Walsall included only two players below 5ft 11ins, Lee Hughes and Andy Liddell.

You can sometimes get away with being outmuscled if you possess far superior talent. That is rarely the case in League One where the reality is size does matter.

Do Albion need more physical presence? Give your view below.

What a load of rubbish. Ok, size does matter in football and in this league you have to be competitive, more in this league than many others perhaps. But height doesn't need to be the reason we sign people. Besides, we've got some tall players we just don't care about. Doug Loft is a 6 footer, anyone care? Nope, anyone care he also has quick feet and the balance to use them both? No. Why doesn't Andy Naylor ever bother asking why Loft is perrenially overlooked, we bring in Bradley Johnson on loan, and that's great. But what do other clubs do when they've got injuries? Try and bring in as many loaness as they can, or give reserve team players a chance? We really don't need Thomson in the midfield, he's not competitive enough. Fraser isn't exactly tiny, and he isn't going to be bullied around, but does he get a chance? No. Sod Thomson, he needs dropping in favour of Fraser and when Johnson returns to Leeds in January, either we sign a 6 footed central midfielder with creative flair, or we give Doug Loft the chance he needs to prove how good he is, and how effective he can be in our midfield.

Also, we should stop bothering with Dean Cox now, he doesn't offer us anything going forward, and even less defensively. We have an unfortunately imbalanced squad, the team is full of good footballers, but we do have the balance either in the first team, or in the reserve players we have.

Elphick is 5'11, which isn't brilliant but he's got a good leap on him and he's learnt the ability to challenge without winning the ball, he's genuine class in league 1. Virgo is 6'1, he should be Elphick's long term partner. Hawkins is also 6'1 but offers nothing of any kind in any way, so let's forget about him. If we recalled Joel Lynch, and played him instead of Richards at left back, we could have a back four of Whing (6ft), Elphick (5'11), Virgo (6'1), Lynch (6'1). And Michel who is 6'2, so that backline is hardly made up of midgets, and our frailty defending corners isn't explainable by the personnel back there. It's tactical ineptitude which wasn't there so much under Wilkins.

Andy Naylor's article show hat is wrong with many people in ngish football - Maradona wouldn't have got in the side becaiuse he was not big enough! If the team pass to each other and move into space then being tall is not important. However, a tall side is the Adams style because he is an old school English, Graham Taylor style hoof it and run manager. This in contrast to Wilkins that used Cox because he has some (not as much as he thinks but some) skill.
Wilkins finished 7th with no money. As for Adams with his hoofers? We shall see.

Almost spot on. Just wouldn't bother with Lynch at left back as he doesn't have the positional sense.

With this talk of Adams being given funds to strengthen in January, I dread to think what kind of rubbish we are going to be lumbered with if this is going to be his policy. Size isn't everything, just look at Hawkins. Our biggest problem defensively is not size, it is that we are a disorganised shambles. They don't play as a unit. In fact that goes for the whole team. The problem looks to me more like poor quality of coaching and tactical thought, not that we need more players over six feet tall.

He's scored, he's scored - it must be Peter Ward, Peter Ward, Peter Ward. A giant amongst players.

Mr Naylor is obviously a football dinosaur-look at the current style of Stoke the team he supports!. Did he not see the Euros when the champions had a complete midfield of smaller technically gifted players!!

also the goals are to low, had they been 10 feet taller robinson would have scored ten this season!! and robinson would be in the england team. quality players from the "centre of county players"
